Fashion mogul in the making to discuss the highs and lows of being an young entrepreneur in SA
This article forms part of the Youth Month 2015 series in which SME South Africa, throughout the month of June, will highlight the work of young entrepreneurs and innovators who are shaping SA’s future.
Nick Kaoma is a young man with a mission – to change SA’s fashion industry. This Free State native is the founder and creative director of Head Honcho clothing, a South African fashion label that designs and manufactures streetwear clothing, hugely popular among SA’s youth and celebs such as rapper AKA.
This young business man says making history is his hobby, and agrees that entrepreneurship is the only way we can solve South Africa’s unemployment problems.

Interesting fact: Kaoma was ranked fourth on the Forbes list of Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs In Africa 2014, was chosen as one of the Mail & Guardians 200 Young South Africans in 2013, and won Hustler of the Year at the 2012 South African Hip Hop Awards.
Kaoma’s advice to youngsters trying to make it in the big time is to “read as much about the industry as possible. If you don’t like reading then watch YouTube videos of successful people. You need to be a sponge … suck as much stuff about this game as possible. Never stop learning!”
According to Kaoma, young people should only start a business if they have : 1. Passion for a particular industry 2. A unique product or service offering, and 3. Business acumen that will help drive your company.
